Re: how hard is to raplce the intake gasket

If you have good mechanical ability it's not fairly hard to do, just time consuming. I'd recommend a factory service manual as it is more "in depth" than a regular repair manual. They can be bought for a good price on eBay and are a good thing to have if you plan on owning the car for awhile. If you can't find one at a reasonable cost you can use a regular manual like Haynes. They pretty much lay it out in a step by step process and list the tools you'll need. Most people on this forum and those whom I have spoken to that have done the job say you will need a good manual to get you through the job.

Try this link:
http://www.oplin.org/databases/proxy...%2fframerq.asp
use 123456789 as a pw then look for the auto repair links. I looked it up and it has a step by step for your V6 with pics, specs and torque specs are avaialble.

Re: how hard is to raplce the intake gasket

another option you may want to consider is finding a good mechanic who charges a reasonable hourly rate.

last year when i needed my intake man gaskets replaced (there's 2 on the v-6) my mechanic checked the book and quoted me $200 + parts. i know he either charges 40 or 50 an hour, so the "book" must say either 4 or 5 hours since he quoted me $200. he doesn't mind me bringing in the parts, but others may.

be sure to buy the updated intake man gasket set.

there's a great forum that's posted at the top of the chevy malibu section that is a MUST read for whoever does the job to prevent this bugger from returning too soon in the near future. it contains tips on using serviceable loctite on bolts, new torque specs, which gasket sets to use, etc.

again, someone has "stickied" it to the top of the chevy malibu section and it starts out in red font "Important: Replacing the intake gasket..."

hope this helps

It's a 4 page thread. My guess is that you didn't go beyond the first page. Change pages by clicking them on the bottom right hand.

Re: how hard is to raplce the intake gasket

I was poking around here for info on some things and came across this thread. I just did the lower intake gasket job on an 01 Malibu and used an excellent write-up from the Grand Am forum. The Grand Am 3.4 and Malibu 3.1 engines are exactly the same at the top end (same P/Ns for all parts, same procedure, etc.). Try this link:
