'91 MPG seems low....

I have a 91 x-cab pickup, V6, 3.0 L, engine, it gets about 14 mpg. I have heard people with the same size engine getting 20+. Mine does have 31" wheels on it, and im not sure how that affects it, i think it should improve it?

Is my milage low, and if it is, any ideas as to why?

Re: '91 MPG seems low....

With taller than stock tires you will notice a loss in power and MPG because the engine is operating outside of it's powerband.
Also the speedo and odo will be off, so if you don't take that into consideration when calculating MPG, it won't be accurate.

Re: '91 MPG seems low....

I have the same truck with 235 75 15's (one size bigger than stock) tires on it and I can barely squeeze 14-15 mpg out of it. I've replaced plugs, wires, cap, roter, air and fuel filter on it also. Driving in town I can only get 10-12 mpg, I thought it would get better than this? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: '91 MPG seems low....

I have a 92 with the same engine setup and 5 speed trans. With alot of tweaking and KN air filter i have gotten mine up to 17.4 to 17.8 consistly on highway milage. I have been monitoring the MPG for the last 2 months to see what kind of MPG that I get when I add a HHO generator to the truck. So I know the numbers are right

Re: '91 MPG seems low....

I have a 92 X-cab 3.0 V6 with 5 speed 4X4
With a lot of tweaking on timing and throttle body adj. Adding new plugs 8mm wires, K&N air filter I have gotten a consistant 17.5 on the highway never checked city. I have checked MPG for the last two months tweaking for ethanol fuel. Power range is sluggish from 1K to 1750 then picks up next job is new injectors as this engine has 305K and never been taken out to be cleaned

Re: '91 MPG seems low....

The poor mileage on this engine is a known thing, although I've never seena good explanation as to why. Could be the gearing that Toyota used to compensate for the engine being dog, but I'm not sure.

I have this engine in a '91 4Runner with 31's, Automatic tranny, and I get 12 around town, not sure about highway. The engine was replaced by Toyota under the head gasket recall 8K miles ago, so it's basically a brand new engine with new injectors, so I guess it's as good as I'm getting. Oh well.
