1996 Olds 88 W/ 211,000 miles

We are considering purchasing a friends car which is a 1996 Olds 88. The car has 211,000 miles and the only maintenance has been routine oil changes. The shocks are bad as well as the front end shakes while coming to a stop. Thye are asking 1500.00 and we will have to sink about another 500.00 to get it right. What sort of issues come about with this model and this many miles. I feel like it is a bad investment.

Welcome to AF, with out on site inspection by a tech, we cannot comment on whether this is a viable purchase. The upper intakes were an issue, but at 211k anything could be ready to give it up.

Thanks, well understood. I was really just wanting to know what major issues this make/model had. The intakes are helpful!

The car is worth only a couple hundred $ with that kind of mileage. $1500 is way high in my opinion. Maybe if everything were perfect-----but otoh I'd rather take a chance on a high mileage 3.8 Olds than any other vehicle.
