Question 420a DP

Does anyone know where I can find premade 420a Down Pipes with that weird t4 5 bolt flange? I've seen one from some company and they wanted like $300 for it. Ya I know any exhaust shop will do it but I'd rather just have everything all together and ready to go.

Or does anyone want to make me one?

Re: 420a DP

I've never seen one, and if you do fine another I'd suspect it would be expensive as well. I'd just take a day and a welder and do it yourself. If I were closer I'd come help.

Re: 420a DP

If I had a welder I'd do it. I want to get one but I can't afford those good ones. I don't see why there's not more... it's not like it's not a common thing. Flange and pipe with same bend and everything.

Re: 420a DP

Actually Dave you should be able to get a gas shielded "suitcase" wirefeed welder for like $250, I think they even come with everything you need aside from the CO2 cylinder. Just something to think about...

Re: 420a DP

I made a thread before about those Pep-Boys welders and was unsure if they'd be good enough for something like that. I just want to buy something once and not have to pay all these separate things like CO2 or whatever.

Re: 420a DP

Let us know if there is a better find, both DP and welder. I'm interested.

Re: 420a DP

Not having a shielding gas will not only make uglier welds, but weaker ones too. IIRC they make flux cored wire thats supposed to be better than just normal wire, but you will wont get as good of welds. You can get ones without the shielding gas cheaper, but you can use the ones with the hookups with out it. Miller brand is what we used at high school, my dad's friend has, and my dad has, but the other good one is Lincoln.

Craftsman has a gasless suitcase welder for $250, a Lincoln with gas hookups for $444 at weldingmart.com, and the Miller was $625. Fuck me, I swear my dad said he bought his suitcase Miller for $300 with some extra shit. Also, I think I found suitcase Lincolns and posted up links on here back in the day... they were on sears.com. Now Sears only has the Craftsman. Huh.

Edit: I was right. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...&sName=Welders That is a Lincoln suitcase, shielded, with shit for $300.

Re: 420a DP

So with that link, you don't need gas then right? It's all electric?

Re: 420a DP

In most MIG welders a shielding gas is "sprayed" out the nozzle to form a blanket around the weld as its happening. CO2 and Argon are the two most commonly used shielding gasses (IIRC) because they are chemically inert at the welding temperatures. Gas shielding stops the reactive components of normal atmosphere, mainly oxygen (again IIRC), from reacting with the metals during the welding process. Ask anyone thats had a shielding gas tank run out on them during a weld or they forgot to turn it on. It sputters, cracks, and pops leaving a nastly looking weld. The weld is weaker due to the inconsistency and the oxidation. I suppose you could go over it agian to touch it up, but it still wont be quite as strong as a good gas shielded weld, plus it will look like complete ass. Like I said, I think they have special wire for gasless welders to minimize this, but it still yeilds unprofessional looking work plus I'd imagine it would be a pain to use and it wont be as strong. I'd just spend the couple bucks and have some CO2 cylinders laying around, I cant imagine they are all that expensive. As far as I know you dont buy the tanks anyway, you rent them and just pay for the gas each time its filled.

Re: 420a DP

Good information. Does anyone know the estimates on the CO2 tanks? And where would rent them?

There's actually a place nearby that rents welders and I believe all the equipment. I'm going to go in there one of these days and see what they have. If I can rent good gear and save some money compared to buying cheap shit, then I may just do that.
