no reverse

I have a 2001 Bravada and a few days ago it all of a sudden lost the reverse gear . There is also a seemingly hard shift from 1-2. I have tried to search the forums as comprehensively as possible and did not find any post with the same issues. Could this just be a solenoid or a fluid issue, or am I in need of a rebuild?

Re: no reverse

any ses light? if the reverse solenoid went, it would set the light off. Otherwise you might have stripped the reverse gear if you were drifting foward then put it in reverse. Has the fluid/filter been changed?

Re: no reverse

No reverse is internal.
But make sure the fluid level is good when hot.
Does it have all forward gears?
How many miles on it?
Pull the transmission pand and look for metal chips and stuff in bottom of pan.
A striped sun gear is a good suspect.
Usually drops metal chips in bottom of pan.

Re: no reverse

Thank you for your replies! I took it into the transmission shop on the suggestion of my future father in law and found out that I had a crack in the case or something like that and the hard shift was due to no 2nd and also no 4th. It has to get rebuilt for around $1500. Does that sound about right for cost?

Re: no reverse

Go for quality more than price.
But That price is good if it is a good quality rebuild.
With a good warranty.
And a good transmission shop.
I would watch the transmission chain stores.
Some good and some not so good.
Also Price out a GM factory rebuilt transmission.
3 year nation wide warranty and is for 50K and may be up to 75K now.
I would ask them more about and to figure out why the case cracked.
Good Luck.

Re: no reverse

No reverse, second, or forth is the broken sun shell not the case. There is a GM bulletin for it. A complete rebuild is generally not necessary. All you need is the upgraded/hardened sunshell and related parts.
How many miles on the Bravada?

Re: no reverse

I agree with '83 cutlass, that sounds like the typical sunshell break/strippage. The '01's were suppose to have a better, updated shell. As for a rebuild, it depends on the milage. If its got high milage, it does not make sense to open the tranny up and just replace the shell. A rebuild at this point is a wise choice. Also clearly state to your rebuild shop that you want "the beast sun shell" Make sure they use these instead of a cheap aftermarket again....especailly if you plan on keeping the truck for a while.
