'01 Beetle : Oil in Engine Coolant
'01 Beetle : Oil in Engine Coolant. Original problem was overheating. Coolant has engine oil in it. Oil cooler?

Yes, this actually should be considered first. From the shop manual: "The [oil] cooler is a potential source of leakage between the lubrication system and the cooling system and should be considered whenever such leakage is suspected." The other source may be a head gasket leaking between the oil and coolant passages. Lets all hope it's the oil cooler... How hot did the car get, and for how long? Kirk |

The oil cooler was leaking. To test it, I pressurized it with air pressure, and submerged it in water. It made air bubbles.

does the oil go through the bottom of the radiator? is that the oil cooler you are talking about?

I didn't know they had an engine oil cooler - there is one for the auto transmission but none for the engine oil on our car from what I can see. No mention of one in our workshop manual.???
