68 289V8 Lights mysteriously turn off when driving

Title pretty much says it, someone told me its my headlamp switch on the dash, but I'm not sure. It is pretty scary when it happens and I no longer drive my old gal at night. I live in the outskirts of the city and its dark as can be, and when the headlights go out.. its almost panic time. I pull the light switch in an out and the headlights come back on, but they'll go out again in about 10-20 seconds. I usually end up driving with one hand on the wheel and one hand on the headlamp switch. Sometimes the pulling on the switch doesn't do anything right away, but I'm persisitant and the lights come back on.. Is it bad wiring? This car still has the original wiring harness.
Tks all

When I read the title of your post, before I read the text, I was going to say switch. I had a '65 F-100 pickup that did this and it was the switch. That's two votes for the switch anyway.
