Re: transmission whining!
Mike, have you checked your transmission oil level yet? Maybe it's low on oil(?) That's all I can think of that's easy. My trans (5 speed stick) was real "notchy" shifting when I first got the car but after two tranny oil flushes, about two weeks driving between each one, it began shifting and downshifting real smooth again. I got what looked like mud out of it the first draining. Maybe this will be YOUR story? Only other thing I can come up with is a bad bearing or ring & pinion. So let's try the oil flush first. Hope this helps you a little. DangerDude

Re: transmission whining!
Change the fluid (maybe try some lucas in with it?) and start saving for a new/used/rebuilt unit. Like Danger said it's probably a bearing, or a funny wear pattern on the 5th gear pair. You could always remove the tranny, crack it open and replace the worn out stuff
