Exhaust work est.

I went to an exhaust shop and got an estimate to get my exhuast changed to true dual, with flowmaster 40's, and to fix my manifold air leak. the guy said i shouldnt bother changing the headers caust if i ever change to a better engine, and that if i do change the headers i'll have to keep tightening them back until they break in or something (which i thought was very strange) for everything he quoted around $500. is this guy asking too much to do all this work and should i keep the stock headers?

Re: Exhaust work est.

If you're running the 305, stick with the stock manifolds. Tube headers will cause a small loss of low end torque which is detrimental to a 305.

$500 is not too bad.

Re: Exhaust work est.

Yah $500 ain't bad at all. Did you get a double hump crossmember? Or are you keeping the stock crossmember? I'd love to see a pic of the undercarriage when you get the work done, I'd like to see how he routes the drivers side pipe. I still need the exhaust done on my '87 and haven't figured out if I need to go snag a newer crossmember from the junkyard or not. Nice paintjob by the way.

Re: Exhaust work est.

Agree with the header opinion. With a stock 305 headers may reduce power instead of increase it. Due to more expansion and contraction with headers as opposed to manifilds, its been said to me before that I would need to be tightening the header bolts periodically after installing headers. Headers also increase the under-hood temperatures and warm up the floor pans nicely too. I don't recommend them for a 305, unless you're really looking for some sound. If and when you do swap to a 350, unless it's built, you really don't need headers to get some nice power, but adding them wouldn't hurt either.

Re: Exhaust work est.

I'm just looking for sound right now, he said since its gonna be true dual exhaust even with the stock headers ill get a better throttle response

Re: Exhaust work est.

Mike561, sorry, I don't mean to change the subject, but I love your new color! Looks great! I remember reading a while back when you were looking for a decent paint job at a good price. Where did you end up going, and if don't mind me asking, how much? I'm thinking about having mine blasted sometime soon. Again, it looks great.

It does look good, it took me a little bit to get used to not seeing a two tone Caprice in your sig, but it's really grown on me.

Re: Exhaust work est.

i would say that $500 is a decent price. there are "speed shops" here that are getting about $500 ($375-$475) for dual cat back systems... and yes your car is looking great
