SOHC rear-mount turbo

Hey guys, i have a 1997 sohc mtx 3000gt and i have been looking at STS rear mount turbo system. they seem like they could be worth it and i know theres at least one sohc with one out there already. however im pretty lost as to what i would have to do other than the full rear mount system, such as the ECU and injectors and fuel rails.and i also know of the very limited aftermarket for the sohc, so that also doesnt help much. If i do follow through with it , i also dont plan on boosting much more than 5 or 6psi. so if you guys have any input or information about it id really appreciate it. thanks

Sid!

Everyone the OP is my good friend whom I have mentioned before. He is by no means a noob. We got curious after meeting and hanging out with a guy who has a rear turbo ls1 trans am, and we started wondering about a rear mount for his sohc...anyone with info it would be greatly appreciated if you shared!

Re: SOHC rear-mount turbo

im a little confused. it's a single turbo, correct? does it only feed the rear bank?

EDIT: alright, just did a quick search, and i assume your talking about this?
http://www.ststurbo.com

thats interesting. ive never heard of anyhting like that. sure is alot of plumbing though. Would it be more cost effective to buy a DOHC instead?

Re: SOHC rear-mount turbo

yep its a single turbo that actually requires no FMIC or any type of intercooler for that matter, so that actually ends up using about the same amount of piping as a traditional FMIC just stretched out a little more. It also claims 97% effeciency if you do choose to install an intercooler
but the universal kit all together is a little less than $3000 and will get me around 250-270 fwhp on 5psi from what i understand.
i hadnt acutally heard of them untill this weekend also, but i found out about them by actually hearing them, they are insanly loud, in a good way of course.
im just wondering what internals i would have to swap out to support the boost such as ECU and injectors like i said before, i am curious about pistons and rods also but i really doubt i would need those unless im boosting somewhat high psi
also like taylor said above, we talked to a guy with an STS system on his WS6 and he said it took a total of 6 hours to install from start to finish, so im thinking that would be a lot less of a headache than a DOHC swap from what ive heard

Re: SOHC rear-mount turbo

+100 hp from 5psi doesnt seem right...I would email the company and see if they can give you some estimates. Those number's seem more suitable for a DOHC running 5psi...

anyways, i would say you would be good with stock TT/VR-4 parts (injectors, rails, etc), but im not even sure if they're compatible.

Re: SOHC rear-mount turbo

Hey jason, wouldnt it be allright to not boost as much...say 5 psi or so? Even if it may not produce the dyno numbers, it would still add a fair amount of power

Re: SOHC rear-mount turbo

have you looked into a conventional turbo or tt setup? I would think it may even be cheaper.

Re: SOHC rear-mount turbo

i have looked into the conventional a little bit
seems id have to custom fab almost everything but the turbo and piping right?
but im thinking the tt swap wouldnt be really worth it
maybe ill just take the easy way out
buy an older VR4

Re: SOHC rear-mount turbo

I would suggest a rippmods supercharger, the kit comes with everything you need bigger injectors and new fuel pump. Only other upgrade you need is headers. Comes all tuned and ready to go just takes a lil bit longer to put on.

Re: SOHC rear-mount turbo

RIPP mods doesn't even off a SDS anymore. Fact is you can get more power, cheaper and easier with a TT swap.
