Question Variable R&P in place of standard

I have a 95 Taurus Wagon that has a problem with the Rack. I have purchased a totalled 95 Sable sedan with less then 10K on it. The Sable rack is equipped with the variable streering option. Does anyone know if it would work in my Wagon that wasn't equipped with variable streering?
Thanks
Nick

Taurus and Sable should be interchangeable, but I'm just surprised that you found a 95 with less then 10K on it Call a Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealer and see if both cars use the same part(s).

Re: Variable R&P in place of standard

Yes the Taurus and Sable use the same racks, I found that out at Auto Zone, the only thing I am concerned about is will the variable steering Rack work without having that option originally. Would the PCM Eprom recognize the variable steering or is that not in it's program? I could put it in and try it but I'm trying to save any unnecessary work on it , if I can.
Thanks
Nick

I don't know for sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if the VAPS rack will basically feel like there is no power assist if you don't have the rest of the VAPS hardware.

Re: Variable R&P in place of standard

Yeah I was thinking that might be the case. But I have everything for the variable system the only thing I don't know is when I plug in the electrical connections, will the pcm see it and activate it. You know I'm hoping for plug and play without Windows.
Thanks Rod

Re: Variable R&P in place of standard

Whew, that's outside my realm of experience. I would be surprised if the PCM would recognize it if the car didn't originally have it, but I don't know.

Have you checked on the price of a rebuild non-VAPS rack? Depending on how much you value your time, that might be the less expensive route in the long run.

Re: Variable R&P in place of standard

Yeah that's what I'll proabably end up doing. I just hate to have a part like this in almost new condition, have a need for it, but not be able to use it. I have used most of the other parts from this car and every one has worked like new.
Thanks Rod
