If you own a 2002+ Honda Odyssey, your 5spd automatic transmission has a filter. Your owners manual doesn't specify a change interval, nor does your typical Honda Service personnel. Most don't even know it's there. They tend to get pretty nasty beyond ~50Kmi from what I've read, and I wouldn't doubt the majority of the trans failures you read about are associated with a clogged filter and subsequent fluid starvation. So far, depending on the year, there are 3 different filters. Note how much different the 2007 AT is. Honda went with the heavier-duty (Ridgeline) 4-shaft AT starting in 2007. Here's the filters:

???? The Odyssey has had ~4 different ATs since their inception. Different models use different filters. Might wanna lay off the pipe there Ace.

I own an Odyssey, I posted a reference for some filters that rarely get attention and don't seem to be posted in this forum and you attack me with "whats the problem"?? Go troll somewhere else.

I think that post is of interest. I just flushed and replaced my tranny fluid on an 03 Ody. At the dealership, I inquired as to whether the filter should also be replaced. Their response was: 'no need to replace the filter... we don't do it here at the dealership. If you had to replace the filter, it would mean that something else has broken in your tranny therefore clogging the filter. You would have a bigger problem on your hands then the filter'. Does this answer from my local dealership falls in the category of BS ? Or is that standard troughout the Honda network to not replace the tranny filter as regular preventative maintenance ?
I would think it would make sense to replace it... has anyone done that job themselves ?... can it be realistically done by home mechanic ?

Well I had the trasfluid raplace about a month ago and I inquire about the filter the service tech told me it was not required I show the service tech your tread and he said it was wrong but I ask again he did not have and answer at all. What Iam going to do after the 60k I wil replace that particular filter because I bought xtra warranty for my honda

Perla, what model year Ody do you have? The pre 2007 Ody trans filters are replaceable, but do take some time and knucklebusting. It's been some time since I posted this thread, but even though the 2007+ has a filter element, it's not replaceable without removing the trans from the vehicle.

I read your thread few months. I also inquire about the filter at the dealership but they do not know anything about it and since we are in this particular thread do you belive it will be a good idea to used synthetic trans fluid also how can I replace the filter

Your 2006 has the filter as shown in the center picture above. Some dealer service personnel know about them, some don't. All they have to do is look up the part number 25450-RAY-003. It's definitely not rocket science for them. You pull the filter element out of the housing by removing the cover, #10 in the picture. You pop the outlet hose off, bracket, then #10 and pull the replaceable element right out. If I owned a 2006, I'd probably replace that element around 60Kmi+. IMO, it's more important to do ATF drain/fills. Use only Honda ATF-Z1 compatible ATF. There are quite of few aftermarket alternatives now. Valvoline Maxlife is one. You just need to read the bottle to see if it can be used for "Honda ATF-Z1 applications".
