Engine wont turn over

Just purchased a 2000 LS, 91000 miles. Drove it down the road for the first time and it quit without any warnings.Tried to start and it just clicks.It turns the motor inches at a time.After about ten clicks it will turn about one complete turn very slow and then goes back to clicking.Almost like a bad starter.But that doesnt explain the quiting. Another thought was maybe the timing chain.I unhooked the surpentine belt to make sure nothing was lock up (ALT. PWR Steering etc...)and it still does the same thing. Any input would be appreciated. Also checked battery and it is fine.

I know you said the battery was good but from all of my experance it's a bad battery.

When you checked the battery it might of had 12 volts but when you put a load on it it will drop way down below that and it shouldn't drop that much. Take your battery out and go to walmart or Pepboy, AutoZone or something like that and they will check it out for free to see if it can handle a load or not.

I would replace the battery.

You also may want to try holding the throttle all the way open, in "clear flood" mode. It almost sounds like you may have somehow flooded the engine. Holding the throttle all the way open will turn off the injectors, so the cylinders should clear after a few revolutions if flooding is the issue.

Is it the V6 or V8?

Rod, its a V/6. I had battery checked and its ok.Again it seems that something is binding the motor. As far as flooding, I dont think, because my problem is, its not turning over, just clicking. Thanks Darrell

you could take out all the spark plugs and then see if it will turn over or turn over easier.

Is it a single click when you turn the ignition to start, or a series of clicking?

A single click would indicate a bad starter motor or something causing the engine not to turn over (such as a flooded engine - hydrolock). A series of clicking would indicate too low of voltage to the starter relay, possibly a bad/dirty connection or a weak battery.

Don't necessarily rely on what the parts store tells you about the battery. I've seen a lot of batteries load test okay, but be too weak to start a car. If you have a multimeter, use it. Measure the voltage on the battery cables when you get the clicking, and also measure the voltage on the battery terminals directly. How do the two measurements compare? What are they reading for voltage?

If you search this forum for "battery" you'll notice a lot of "good" batteries are the causes of a lot of Lincoln LS problems.

Got it started but now I have a loud pecking sound from under the car .Sounds like a bolt has come lose on the fly wheel / tourqe conveter. At first I thought it was a rod knocking, but after getting under it and inspecting, the noise appears to be comming more from the tranny. At least thats what Im hoping.I'll know more today. youch sounds more expensive than just a battery or starter. Sorry to hear that.

What did it take to get it started? That might offer some insight into what the noise is since there's no mention of the noise prior to the stall going down the road in your first post.
