Check Engine Light

I have a 2000 3.5 w/180,000

I read on another thread someone had their "check engine light" come on, but I really didn't get a good answer as to why. My used to come on when the outside temperature changed quickly, but for the last several months, it's stays on. I had it check and was told it was some sort of sensor.

My question is, is this something major? I was told by others it was a defect of this car. Does anyone else have this issue?

Also, my car is loosing coolant. I have to fill up about every 2 weeks or so. Anyone else with this issue?

Re: Check Engine Light

It could be about a bajillion (thats the technical term) things. The check engine light just means there is some sort of problem with the vehicle, it could be minor, could be a little serious, if youre not having any issues, its probably not a big deal.

Heres what you do, go to your local Autozone, Oreillys, NAPA, wherever, tell them your check engine light is on, theyll bring a code reader out and pull the codes for, make sure you write down the code #, then post back here and we'll help you fix it as best we can.

But we do need the code # at the least to even begin to help you out. Or at least remember which sensor it is

Re: Check Engine Light

With regard to your coolant loss, it could be a sign that the water pump is going.

Re: Check Engine Light

I'm glad you can give an estimate on what something will cost when you don't even know what is wrong with the vehicle. Plenty of sensors that go bad in the Intrigue: Camshaft, crank sensor, MAF, fuel sender, oxygen, etc.

LOL...oh i wish vehichles were that easy

the coolant loss could be many things...could be more serious like your intake manifold (common on the 3.8L engines) it has to be diagnosed. BUT, if youre loosing coolant and you cant see any leaking out onto the ground, that is bad. The only oher place it can go is into the engine.

Check engine light simply means a diagnostic code was set by the cars computer. You have to get the car scanned with a simple OBD2 scanner and it will tell you what caused the light to turn on. Literally (as mentioned) hundereds of things can turn the engine light on.
