2004 Ford Explorer XLT tow hitch question
I recently purchased a 22 fishing boat. Boat, motor and trailer weigh approximately 4700-5000 pounds. I see my towing capacity is rated at 5300 yet I have a class II hitch installed on my truck which is rated at 3500 pounds. Anyone know the process of swapping out the factory class II hitch for a higher rated hitch? Strange why Ford would install a smaller hitch when every other SUV of it's size has a tow hitch with a higher towing capacity. All answers and suggestions appreciated.

Re: 2004 Ford Explorer XLT tow hitch question
Does your Explorer have the towing package installed? Maybe the towing package included a larger receiver? Also, check for an auxilliary transmission oil cooler if you are planning to tow this heavy of a boat and you want to give the Explorer a chance at surviving. If you don't have one, consider getting one installed.
Kudos on being one of the seemingly few who actually check the rating of their receiver rather than just assuming it's sufficient! -Rod |
