Yo.... need some advice.... to buy or not to buy

Well.... I found a 1996 3000 gt SL 5-speed. (not turbo)..... It has 170000 miles on it some new parts. Its had no transmission or engine work except for the normal maintanence. They replaced the timing chain, water pump and EGR recently. Car is in good shape.

Problem is they want 6500 (i was thinking too high). It started to burn some oil a while back, so they change the cam seals, and it didn't fix the burn off. There selling it because there business went south/gas prices on the commute.

So i'd like to know whats a good price I should offer and how much would it cost to swap the engine (eventually) or any other common problems. I'd like to know what to check for before I test it out. Any help would be great.

And do I have to use premium? LOL...... and what MPG do you get out of yours in town?

Thx guys, Jared

Re: Yo.... need some advice.... to buy or not to buy

yes that's too much for that mileage
yes you have to use premium
If you grandma shift it at 2500 or so and drive nicely you shouldnt have a problem pulling down close to 30

btw these cars have a timing belt, not chain, so if they told you they changed the timing chain... you may want to be suspicious.

the main thing is, even if it were in MINT condition, with 170kmi it only bluebooks for 6k. I would keep looking, becuase in that price range you can do much better (fron the sound of it).

As for what the car's worh...hard to day sight unseen. A car is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. I would guess maybe 5500 ballpark? But if they're really rare in your area, hey, supply govern's price

welcome to the forums though, man. any other questions feel free to ask.

EDIT: to answer a few of your other questions, oil burn is most likely valve stem seals, it's a fairly common thing with these cars. Other things to check for...transmission synchros (1-2 mostly), hmmm...all the normal stuff you'd check for on any car. Theres a lot of good info in the FAQ thread so give that a read. It's WELL worth the 30 minutes.

I wouldn't pay a penny over $4k for that. Too much mileage/age.

Yes you need to use premium.
