1992 Dodge caravan

Weird problem, I bought this van with only a maint light on and bad tie rod ends. Still haven't figured that out. Anyway I new the front brakes needed to be replaced (very thin rotors) none the less Yesterday I bought the parts, new rotors and pads. On my way home the brake light on the dash came on and the brake petal lost pressure to the floor!! Still able to stop but brakes go to the floor...... What caused the brake light to come on? the loss of brake pressure? Iheard it might be a brake booster, if so where is it and how do you replace it? [email protected]

Do you mean a check engine light by maint light?? Check for codes by doing the key dance: on/off- on/off-on without starting engine and count the flashes of the check engine light. Example flash, pause flash flash means code 12. Post codes if present. 55 means end of codes.

Have you checked the brake fluid level? Check for a brake fluid leak. Could also be the master cylinder has failed.

Go to this site, it gives the procedure for testing the brake booster:
http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us...rInfoPages.htm

The brake booster is located on the firewall drivers side, big round canister that has a vacuum hose going to the intake manifold. To remove and replace you will have to disconnect the rod from the master cylinder to the brake pedal underneath the dash, then remove the master clyinder, then remove the booster from the firewall by removing I believe it 4 nuts off the bolts underneath the dash.

Do you have a vaccum leak? The booster does fail but not very common to my knowledge, so make sure it is faulty before replacing. Check this hose from booster to intake manifold to make sure it is not leaking. IF the booster is bad a vaccum leak should be evident.
