'83 3.8L knocking after oil change??

I recently bought an '83 model Olds Cutlass with the 3.8L Buick engine (so I am told). 250$ Started right up, sounded good too. Ran pretty good too, a little weak, but good. Motor was pretty quiet. It had a lifter tapping that would come and go. I decided (stupidly) to add a cleaner to the crankcase, a good one too, Seafoam, to clean or loosen the sludge before I changed the oil. I changed the oil and added 10w-30. When I fired it up afterwards, it was now sounding like a diesel. I let it run for a couple of minutes to see if would stop, it didnt. It started to overheat, misfire, and then proceeded to stall. Drained the oil and added straight 40w, problem still there. I have been told to put straight 50w oil in and prime the oil pump with grease or petroleum jelly or something like that. I am considering buying a kit for the oil pump. I am not sure what all is involved in doing that. Any suggestions, ideas, or comments would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Why was this moved here? This is not an N-body. This is not a front wheel drive car...

Sounds like you hav other problems then the oil.
Someone could have put additives into the previous oil to keep it quiet. Then when you flushed it, now its knockin/noisy.

How much Seafoam did you put in the oil ?

Actually it belongs at the Cutlass forum. So I am moving it there. Don't know who moved it to N Body. From what I see it was originally posted at Regal.

Re: '83 3.8L knocking after oil change??

Maybe the "Classics" forum?? 1983...

Anywho, I finally got it to stop knocking. After removing the oil pump gears and stuffing everything in sight with "petroleum jelly" as recommended by various sources (even a technical manual, LOL), as well as filling the oil filter up, it still knocked. Last chance.... Since the car "came" with the oil "over-filled", I figured... Fill it up and then some, rise the oil level all the way to the pump, I did and it worked. No more knocking, now she's missing real bad, fouled the plugs from all the oil. I am going to replace the plugs now and drain some oil and see where that takes me...

We have two threads now! One for fouled plugs in Classics, let's keep this in one thread, way too much work for all us of here, see my answer in the classic thread then I am going to delete it.

So, should I be posting in Classics with my "25 year old car" or here?

Re: '83 3.8L knocking after oil change??

Do you consider your 25 year old car a classic or just a 25 year old car? Really doesn't make any difference as long as you are getting replies.

What say you Shep (maxwedge)?

Re: '83 3.8L knocking after oil change??

People could get confused regarding what they own in respect to whether the age of their car makes it a classic, not every 25 year old car qualifies of course. Makes no difference to me where it winds up as long as we do not have 2 threads a the same time. Either way they will get help from one of our many experts in the area.
