advice on 2001 2500HD truck!!!!
Hey guys I have a 2001 silverado 2500HD 6.0L V8 Gasoline engine extended cab and have a few questions?
1. I was wondering what size my engine is? 2. With this many miles, should i worry about the timing belt and how much is that going to roughly cost? 3. What are common problems with this truck?(except piston slap) Thanks for the responses |

How many miles does it have unless its got well over 150k, I wouldnt worry to much about it, and even with that many it shouldnt be an issue. And for your third question, 2500HD's are a pretty damn well built truck. great motor, great tranny, great rear axle. The front IFS is strong for and IFS (not the greatest of designs for durability), but ball joints, wheel bearing, idler/pitman arms. But these hold up well as long as you are running narrow wheels and normal size tires. Hope this helps

It also does not have a timing "belt". It has a timing "chain" which last much longer (usually) than a timing belt.

Re: advice on 2001 2500HD truck!!!!
I personally think oil changes every 3k miles is overkill... I change mine when my truck tells me to do so... almost 90k miles so far, probably 70k of those in the Texas summer heat and it doenst burn a drop. And I've heard getting the tranny flushed is not your best optioin, but dropping the pan is much better

If I change mine at 3k it comes out looking brand new. No matter what brand name I use, the oil don't turn black till around 6,300 miles. I have over 132k miles on it. When the light comes on to change the oil, I MAY be 1/2 quart low. If I use the cheaper oil..I dropped the transmission pan on mine at 108k (finally) It was a pain to get out. I have a Z71, don't know if the 4x2 is easier. Anyway, same deal on that, the fluid coming out didn't look or smell bad. The filter did look a little dirty though. |

Re: advice on 2001 2500HD truck!!!!
My computer comes up to tell me to change the oil at about 2 or 2.5 kmiles. It seems it calculates for engine RPM's and time running. In any case I do change it at every 2.5Kmiles or so, oil is black and dirty anyway by then, and I do have to add about a quart every 1k miles...
