64 Impala Tune Up Q's
Well my buddy just bought a decent 64 impala and have been trying to find a manual for it for minor tune ups... well everything is a pay for site like chiltons and so on..so was hoping that someone on this forum would be able to help me with just a couple questions...
First one is where exactly is the fuel filter located on these impalas not too familiar with them? Other is the rear tail lights will not come on more than likely it is a wiring issue but other than bulb are there any other things to check that could be simple fixes..oh also replaced fuses.. we have already done a couple things to help out at first the car wouldn't even start so checked around and found out a plug wire wasn't connecting well so replacing those shortly along with spark plugs...and was going to do a fuel filter but not for sure where it is and don't have a way to lift the car at the moment. and any other recommendations on these older cars for tune ups motor was rebuilt 2 yrs ago... any help is appreciated thx..! Re: 64 Impala Tune Up Q's
Parts can change over the years but your fuel filter should be where the fuel line attaches to the carb, inside the carb. You'll need a 5/8" wrench to remove the fuel line and a large wrench to remove the fuel filter casing.
The tail light problem is most likely rust causing a ground problem. The lights are grounded thru the chassis. You'll need to remove the tail light assembly and use a medium sandpaper to clean the grounding surfaces between the tailight housing and the body metal. You can use a dialectric tuneup grease to keep the sanded contact surfaces from rusting again. Make sure the taillight light socket is not rusty. If it is, you'll need to use a rust stripper on it. Brush it in and work it with a stiff brush (old toothbrush for example). The sockets could be so far gone that they need to be replaced. Use new bulbs of course. Use a long thin necked oil can to squirt some ATF in the cylinders and let sit for a couple of days. Try to get the oil onto the far side of the cylinder wall thru the spark plug hole. In that time, verify the tuneup settings. Carl (link removed by moderator) Last edited by MagicRat; 02-29-2008 at 08:07 PM. |
