ABS light coming on. UPDATE

The ABS issue has been resolved and it only costed $500.

One of the wire harnesses to the front ABS sensors was broken/intermittent and they suggested that both be changed. They gave me back the old harnesses and they do indeed look bad.

Intermittently and lately more frequently, the ABS light (along with a chime) is coming on in my 2000 Malibu LS and is cleared when the ignition is turned off. At first it would only do it rarely and in extremely cold weather (-30°C) but now it does it in warmer weather (-2°C to -12°C). The other day it was accompanied with the other brake light coming on as well but that only happened once and has yet to re-occur.

I have topped up the brake fluid reservoir to the "max" line but still it persists.

Anyone have any ideas?

You could just have a bad ABS sensor at your brakes. Do you notice a difference in braking?

Re: ABS light coming on.

Are any of your front wheel bearings bad? Get them replaced. The sensor comes with it. As weird as this may sound, check your alternator. My alternator light came on a week after my abs light. Both lights went out after replacing the alternator. ABS came on a year later and disappeared once I fixed the wheel bearing that was really bad.

Re: ABS light coming on.

I have a front wheel bearing going bad and the ABS light came on as got worse. Thanks alot for the input. This backs up my initial diagnosis of the bad bearing.
