hello,
My name is Ryan and this is the first thread i am posting. I have a 1999 Buick Century Custom that I have just purchased. The problem I have been experiencing is when you try to engage the low beams, it does not want to come on. For the 99 buick century, you have to pull the light switch towards you and flash your high beams to turn them on. When I purchased the vehicle, this worked until recently. I have checked all the fuses in the relay external box and the internal fuse box. I have also removed the switch and tried to trace/check the wires in the harness. However someone replaced the wires going into the wire harness as it does not follow the electrical schematics found in my tear down book. I have checked the bulbs for the low beams and they seem in good order. What should I do? Should I try running a seperate line from the fuse box to a toggle switch and bypass everything since all the wires i cannot trace? I know there is no power going to lights. So it has to be either a fuse problem or a switch not connecting. I have already checked all the fuses and tested them and I have already tried to trace the wires from the switch but unable to since someone replaced them with different color wires not matching the schematics. Can anyone help me? |

Re: 1999 Buick Century Custom with Low beams problem
The dimmer switch is part of the turn signal/multifunction switch in the steering column. It sounds like the contacts are are bad and causing the low beams to not fully engage. Sometimes the switch can be removed and cleaned, but usually it will require switch replacement to fix it correctly.

Re: 1999 Buick Century Custom with Low beams problem
Thanks. That is what I tried to do...but it seems that after i got the steering column covers off and took a real look at the switch, I would have to remove the steering wheel itself to get to this last bolt to remove the switch out.

Re: 1999 Buick Century Custom with Low beams problem
You can access that bolt by turning the steering wheel about 90 degrees or so. It's a tight fit, but you can get to it without removing the steering wheel/air bag.

Are you sure, because I have tried to turn the steering wheel several angles and positions and either do not have the tool nor the space to get to the last bolt for the switch to come out.

Re: 1999 Buick Century Custom with Low beams problem
I have a 2000 Buick Century and my husband had to replace the dimmer switch on my car a few months back - headlights were going out when I tried to use the dimmer switch. And he had the same problem - he was told he wouldn't have to pull the steering wheel, but couldn't get to where he needed without taking the steering wheel off - he rented a steering wheel puller from someplace like Autozone, put on the new dimmer switch/multi function switch and it works great.
