Im having a brake wear issue, it keeps happening to me over and over, where on both sides of the car the pad by the tire wears to the metal and the pad closer to engine is brand new still. The rotors are fine, fairly new. not grooved or warped.
so last time I bought new calipers, new slide bolts for the calipers, new brake lines, and the pads in august 06, so 1.5 years ago. all greased properly. now here it is just a year later, and the brake pads are oddly worn again, with the pad nearest the tire being gone and the one nearest the engine still new. I am at a total loss as to why this is happening. I do not ride the brakes or drive crazy. also i have replaced shoes and wheel cylinders on rear so those are fine. help! btw 1990 cavilier 4 door |

Re: Brake wear issues
That senerio tells me that the slider pins/assy. are frozen on allowing the outboard pad to continuiously ride the rotor. You apply the brake and it only half releases
Is there a dust boot over the slider assy? and, When you "greased" it, Was there greased slider parts visible for dirt to grab the grease? There shouldnt be.everything should be internaly greased/sealed. This is just a statement. Most people over grease things . You may have a set of porely rebuilt calipers. I had two in a row the same day once. Same side though but from the same place. I always rebuildt my own after that treat of a time. 1.5 years of a slider assy. in the open weather, they will corode quicker than that. Bottom line is: The outboard pad is staying in the enguaged position, The only thing that can do that is the slider assy. OR the wrong caliper. |

Re: Brake wear issues
Well, i have changed these pads 5 times in 6 years because of this, and they are ready again.
They are not stayinf engaged, at least enough to feel it slowing me down or anything I have changed, EVERYthing on those front brakes and it still keeps doing it, F MY car! |

the use of the correct grease is important on the pins...with the pins on vehicles I've worked on the use of a high temp grease is best..1500F.. then on other types the use of silicone grease on the rubber donut pin guides... make sure the pads on the piston don't bind..may need to file the edges... removal of the caliper from the system and using a air pump work the piston out then see if you can slide back the piston by hand...with not too much effort... bleeding the brakes hold the piston fully back with a C clamp and then bleed,,,air could cause the pistons to not retract slightly when you take your foot off the brake.. with a 1990 cav, though I'm not sure exactly what type you have.. |

Re: Brake wear issues
I have had this show up on several cars. The solution I have found is to clean ALL grease off the caliper and spray Aero-Kroil on it where it floats on the pins. Never a problem after.
