1999 accord stalling issue (solved)

I started asking on another thread about the car stalling in drive. But I though it was worth posting again in a new thread if it helps anybody solve there stalling problems.
We have a 99 accord that would stall whenever it wanted. To make a long story short I was told by the dealed it was the aftermarket autostart. While removing the autostart I had the key on but the car was not running I was wiggling the wires that come from the ignition swtich. The relay clicked and the dashlights flickered so I new I was on to something. I removed trhe switch from the car and set it in the "run"position with a screw driver and hooked a multi meter to the black and white wires to complete the loop. I wiggled the wires around once again and the meter was jumping all over the place showing the switch was bad. This switch was already replaced by the dealer under recall.
QUESTION> SHOULD THE DEALER BE ON THE HOOK FOR THE NEW SWITCH AND SHOULD THEY HAVE TO REIMBERSE ME FOR THE 100.00 DIAGNOSIS THAT WAS INCORRECT?? I am not going to bother trying to get them for the 250.00 auto start that I had to remove on there diagnosis.

Re: 1999 accord stalling issue (solved)

UPDATE: The dealer agreed to replace the ignition switch again and reimburse me for the mis- diagnosed autostart. I did not try to get them to replace the autostart, I think they are more trouble than there worth anyway.
So, If you have an accord that stalls even after the ignition recall it may be the switch again.
I will update this post when I get the car back and it has been driven for a while to se if there are any more stalling issues.

Well, We have had the car back for about a month and no stalling.
So if your are having trouble similar to this I would recommend taking the lower cover off the steering colum and take a good look at the ignition switch wires Give them a wiggle with the car running and see if it stalls.
I worked for me after months (and 4 trips to the dealer/shop) of going crazy trying to figure it out.

Re: 1999 accord stalling issue (solved)

thank you for letting the board know this as we are having issues with our 99 accord not starting and stalling while driving as well .. now that it is no longer covered by warranty..OF COURSE.. right after the last tune up under warranty within 100 miles the thing would start and die out 3 times it would finally decide to run.. then on local hops it would also stall out around 30 mph.. sometimes resume others you would have to restart .. we replaced the main relay but that got us 2 weeks of no head aches and now we are back to the same issues getting worse with each week.. thank you so much..

I also thought it was a bad ignition switch as well but when my mom told me they changed it on a recall I gave up figuring it was a good part they put in it..I never heard of parts going within 10 years... rarely if ever .. even 30 years ago before the advancement in technology HAHA.. the general rule was most cars had 100,000 mile mark or ten years when they would begin to fall apart..today the cars arent even 3 years old and transmissions are dying what is going on.. some advancement...very discouraging..

Actual recall was not about electrical parts, rather mechanical (you could pull the key while in Drive).

I am trying to find a replacement procedure for electrical contacts I used to have. If I find it I will post it here.

Strange because the dealership did not replace the clynider part of the switch on ours.. only the electrical part.. they even broke the black cover plate... which I think is poor workmanship .. I took pictures of that today... also noted they never put back 2 screws one which holds the electrical contact in place the the other one to the black cover which is in 5 peices 2 of which are no longer in the car.. I took one of the screws for the black cover and used it to secure the contact in place and the cover I borrowed one from something else.. I have never seen such poor mechanical work on a car from a dealership I hope that mechanic is no longer there..
I made a complete run around town today and made numerous stops.. no issue so far.. we will see when the REAL driver get in if the problem resurfaces.. meaning it is driver error.. correct..LOL

Re: 1999 accord stalling issue (solved)

We have replaced ignition switches that were done a few years back under recall. There is no warranty on them so we get the work. Electrical stuff doesn't last 10yrs, that's why there is usually NO warranty any new electrical parts you buy.
