wont start and no spark but cranks

98 intrigue 110000 miles
ran it out of gas one day
was able to fill it up and ran fine for a day came out the next day to start it and it wouldnt start
now the car will crank but wont start
pulled spark plugs to see if i was getting a spark and nothing
fuses are good
could it be a relay, crank sensor, ignition switch
I am at a lost and dont want to start replacing parts that dont need replacing
any help and advice would be great

Re: wont start and no spark but cranks

How did you check for spark? I pull a wire from one of the front plugs, insert a spare plug & rest the base of the plug against the head or block. Watch for spark while someone cranks over the engine. Repeat with the other two front cylinders to eliminate the possibility of a bad coil. The wires have to be on the rear plugs while doing this test.

If none of the front cylinders are sparking then check for 12 volts at the pink wire in the ICM wiring harness. Key has to be in run position. Let us know if you're not getting 12 volts.

If the pink wire has 12 volts then you pretty much have it narrowed down to ICM, crank sensor or the wiring between them. Best way to check ICM is by trying it on another car. I'd say we see 3 or 4 times more bad crank sensors than ICM's.

Re: wont start and no spark but cranks

I guess the big question is whether or not you have any codes (Check Engine Light). Also if this happened the day after you ran out of gas, I would check to make sure the fuel pump and regulator are OK.

Re: wont start and no spark but cranks

I tested for spark similar to the way you described i just didnt use a spare plug
Fuel pump comes on when I turn the key and there is fuel in the fuel rails
And there are no codes to be pulled
question though what is ICM an acronym for

Thanks again

ICM is the ignition control module, its located underneath your coils on the left side of the engine if youre standing in front of the car looking at the engine.

Re: wont start and no spark but cranks

i pulled the starter and did not see anything resembling the crank sensor
i also read somewhere that it is located by the harmonic balancer

Re: wont start and no spark but cranks

ooooh crap!! dude im sorry, i didnt notice you had a 3.8, the ckps is behind the starter on the 3.5, and yes i do believe its behind the harmonic balancer on the 3.8. you might want to get yourself a basic repair manual for your car to at least tell you where stuff is at. Dont always really on forums, sometimes people can screw stuff up *cough* *cough*

Im not sure how hard it is on the 3.8, i know its a pretty easy procedure on the 3.5, seems like not so much on the 3.8

Re: wont start and no spark but cranks

http://mykidz.net/GTP/CrankPosSensor.shtml (3800 GTP)

the Info is on this forum also somewhere

I don't like this situation since you have no OBD2 codes. What OBD2 scanner are you using?

I would actually recommend going to the dealer for the Tech2 scan or borrow someones Tech2. Right now you are really just guessing on these sensors.

Re: wont start and no spark but cranks

A bad crank sensor with no trouble codes, thats definetely somewhat unique.

Glad you got it fixed though, and Im sorry you had to pull the starter for no reason. I still feel like a heel when I read back through that.
