brake question

I have a 97 cherokee and recently took it in for a oil change. They called and told me it needed new pads,rotors,and drums. Seeing how I will be selling my vehicle in a few months I opted to pay the 500 dollar bill to sell a good vehicle. My question is the vehicle has 120,000 miles, what is the life span of the rotors and drums. I know you have to replace the pads, but not sure of the other parts. Another problem is they didn't gage the brakes right so my left pad is still compressed while I am driving. I can smell it pretty bad. Any help would be appreciated

the smell is most likley the caliper hanging up/frozen on. this would need rebuilding or replacement.
Pads are made so strong nowdays that they accually eat the drums and rotors away. The old asbestos pads wouldnt do this.
That is the reason for the (Lifetime brake job).
Pads and shoes are cheep so they get you for rotors, drums and labor.
As a ruel of thumb. pads are good for 100,000 and the rears 200,000, two to one.
So in theroy, you would do a front brake job then when the fronts are ready again it is time to do the backs.
That sticking caliper will cause the new pad to eat away at the new rotor so I would get that taken care of.
It is nice to hear that your selling the vehical and installlng the new brakes for the next guy.
Not to many people do that any more.

Replace that much on a brake job? If your pads are worn or you have a stuck caliper, than I would say ok, with the milage the rear shoes too need to be looked at and possibly replaced. But replacing the drums and rotors! I would have them measure them first. Most shops will turn a rotor or drum before thy replace it unless they are lazy.
MAkesure that they use the right rotors for your XJ, there is a model year that they changed the rotors and it will cause further problems. Most autoparts stores will only carry in stock one of the two types.
