Exclamation Abs Control Module Not Working??

I have a 1998 OLD Intrigue with 88,000 miles. The ANTI LOCK and BRAKE light are coming on. when I break it feels that all the stopping power is coming form the front of the car. Also when i first start the car and drive off I hear a noise from where the master cylinder is , the sounds like a "clunk" sound. I took into a "MIDAS" shop and they told me that it is the ABS CONTROL MODULE NOT WORKING. They said that my back brakes are not working at all and that only my front breaks are. They also told me that the module was behind the master cylinder and that they would have to take it off to replace it. I looked into that my self and the module is in the left kick panel above the E brake. Well after all that my question is ....with all thats going on and what the mechanics said ...Does this sound like the ABS Module not working ...and or is it something else ???

Re: Abs Control Module Not Working??

I was actually under the impression that the module was under the hood, i thought it was the electric "box" that all the brake lines run into from the MC and then out of.

The back brakes not working thing doesnt quite make sense, unless there has been some sort of mechanical failure in the modulator as opposed to an electronic one. The brakes should still work well enough, or i would think so anyway.

You should be able to confirm the back brakes working by jacking up a rear wheel and applying the brakes with the car running, see if they clamp down. You could also check the rear pads, which could simply be thin or practically non existant.

But Im assuming they hooked it up to a scanner to tell you that information, so it could very likely be correct. Its not a cheap part new at all, used might be a better bet. You might want to confirm where its located first though, i really thought it was under the hood.

Question Re: Abs Control Module Not Working??

I googled the part alot and found one site that told me the ABS Conrol mod was on the left kick panel , I even looked for one on EBAY and found one from a 98 like mine, they gave the part number and it matches the one I found in my kick panel. It is a silver box with part numbers:
09353511
*743511r080424385*

I unplugged it and turned on the car only the "antilock" light came one but not the brake. I plugged it back up and no lights came on until it did the check the module does then they both came back on. I plan on calling the dealership for the exact part number to make sure this is it.

The guys a MIDAS told me that the module being out is making my back breaks not work. Does that sound right???

Thanks for the info

Re: Abs Control Module Not Working??

Your ID and location of the module is correct. The proper name is Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) or Electronic Brake & Traction Control Module (EBTCM). See link below for a pic of it.

The ABS system was redesigned and later with the Bosch 5.3 ABS systems found in 1999? - 2000 and up Intrigues GM moved and integrated the EBTCM with the ABS pump motor assembly found under the hood.

As far as this problem if the rear brakes are not working hydraulically then it sounds more like a conventional braking problem possibly related to the master cylinder and proportioning valves. But you never know for sure. Without seeing the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) from the ABS braking system hard to say what the real cause is. If you have any codes post them. They should start with a C and look like this. C0XXX or C1XXX.

Re: Abs Control Module Not Working??

Good info BNaylor, I didnt know they redesigned the system midstream in the Intrigue. I was wondering why I thought mine was under the hood, its because it is!

Theres one difference among Intrigues I guess.

Re: Abs Control Module Not Working??

Having Midas diagnose your ABS problem was apparently a waste of money. I'd take to a GM dealership and have them tell you whats wrong.
