305 sensor

i have a 305 in my 77 monte carlo, what is the sensor that threads in to the water passage in the cylinderhead

what sensor goes there, is it the water temp sensor?

i took it out but now i cant find it

Yes it is most likely the water temp sensor. Should thread into the drivers side head.

Driver's side between cylinders 1 & 3 would be the gauge sending unit.
