Peanut Butter...

So after it had been suggested a few times in OT I couldnt resist trying to use peanut butter (yes, peanut butter) to restore and clean my 17 yr old plastic trim.

So I had the peanut butter. I had the time. I had no shame.

I was amazed at how quickly I noticed a difference while applying the stuff.
The plastic immediately returned to its original dark color and as I worked the peanut butter in it regained a deep luster. I worked in in a little bit and then left the brown stuff to sit for about 5 mins or more.

The pictures really speak for themselves, although they are taken with my phone.

My mirrors were already in pretty good shape but this stuff sure didnt hurt!

The biggest difference I noticed was in the trim around the windshield and on the grille above the hood. I had gotten polish on these parts and they seemed destined to be chalky and white forever.

(I got peanut butter on the lens)

The peanut butter did almost nothing to the painted metal pieces on the doors shown here. But I didnt expect it to really.

In all I was very pleased that the plastic trim really came back to life, and even got much smoother instead of the chalky dry rough feeling that it had before.
I may have been able to use back to black, or some other methods to get similar results but hell, I had 1/4 jar of peanut butter and I felt like making my car look nicer. Only problem was that I ran out of the stuff..and my hand doesnt fit in the jar so well.

Also, once i ran out of peanut butter..the terry cloth I was using to wipe the stuff off was so saturated with it that I was able to use it as a spot remover for the wax that had dried onto the car in various places, and even got a few pieces cleaned nicely even without applying the peanut butter right to them..there was just so much in the rag that I rubbed it in. Not as good as using the stuff directly but alot better than globbing the stuff right on my paint.

Frodo,

I'm sorry that you don't live close to me. I would gladly pay you to put your knowledge to better use.

I'd pay you to work on my civic.

Re: Peanut Butter...

I suspect its the oil in the peanut butter thats bring the luster back. The only problem you're going to have now is squirrels scratching up the car.

Re: Peanut Butter...

Because it is the oil why not try some cooking oil on a rag, then rub it on the plastic. THis way you don't have the mess of all the peanut butter and it won't cost you $20 in peanut butter. Just a thought...

Re: Peanut Butter...

Um..wtf kind of peanut butter are you using? I used less than 1/4 of a jar on almost my whole car.

But yeah im considering just trying peanut oil.
