Remote Starter
Has anybody ever installed a remote starter in their van. i purchased a prostart remote starter from can tire.(they are on sale right now for half price) I think i am gonna try and install this myself because i just got the basic unit. What i need to know is there is a couple of wires that i need to find. the ignition wire, the parking lights positive wire and negative wire and i think that these are all the ones i need. or if anybody has wiring diagrams that would really help, thanks. i have a 02 montanna.

Good luck. I had an aftermarket remote starter (Crimestopper) installed in my '97 Venture back in 2000 and it seemed to have opened a "Pandora's Box " of trouble. Right after the install, things started to act up that never gave me problems before, such as rear wiper had intermittent operation, power locks would cycle on and off while driving, directional signal would act up, and a host of other electrical "gremlins". After awhile things seemed to calm down and it worked pretty good. Unfortunately, the shop that installed the unit went bankrupt shortly after putting it in my van ,( after 75+ years in business no less,) and I had no recourse.
When I bought my 2006 Uplander , I found that GM now sold a remote start kit that they installed from the factory. I had it installed in my van at the dealer this past fall and so far there have been no issues,<knocks on wood>.

All I hear about those low priced self installed remote starters is not good.
I am sure there are other accessories you will need for this instalation to go smooth. I had one installed at a local sterio/electrical installation shop. I bought there model, 275.00 installed. three years and running with no problems. This is the first and only thing I have ever payed to have done. Mabey a better post would be, who has had problems installing after market remote starters. that will tell a storie. |

I've installed Remote starters on all my current vehicles with no issues- and I have done about 85 other R/S installs- including your U-van-
The standard GM wires apply in your case- at steering column- red is 12v hot- pink is ignition -1, white is 2nd ignition- must be used, yellow is starter, orange is heater accessory, parking lites are brown (+12v) at light switch or use the (-) brown/white at the BCM to the right of the glovebox- door locks are easy. horn is black, tach is purple/white at ignition coil, brake light is white at brake switch The big thing you need to have is a transponder bypass- to signal the van to remote start- your key fob (PK3 on key)has an FM radio transmitter in it- to activate the receiver in next to the ignition switch- you could buy the "key in the box" method (Ebay for $9.99) and lose a key under the dash, or you can get a full blown module for about $35 that would need to be learned.. it'a up to you - I usually use the easier "lose a key in the box method". Your car will not remote start without addressing this.......

I agree with the above statement when it comes to alarms-- I hate them- they always go off at the wrong time or don't work at all-- but remote starters work great- if and only if the install is done correctly- soldering is a must- no T-taps- and neatly tucking away wires- I have made a lot of people really happy with my installs- and they always come back- not with problems but with more vehicles to install them on-- I warrant all my work- but very rarely do I ever need to fix or replace anything other than a few remote batteries.....Sure is nice when everyone else is scraping ice at work and I sit at my desk finishing my coffee......
