Your problem may have to do with the Brake Transaxle Shift Interlock which is designed to keep you from moving the shifter out of park without the brake pedal being depressed.

Do you have trouble when pulling your key out of the ignition?

Re: 98 malibu trans problems i think

The shift interlock is only supposed to work with the key in the Run or Start position. So you could try turning the key to the ACC position than try to shift out of park. See what that does

Re: 98 malibu trans problems i think

Its still possible that the interlock is sticking. I believe the brake switch could have something to do with it also. When you push the brake pedal the interlock is supposed to de-energize. Maybe try checking if your brake lights are working properly
