89' engine dies...

Hey, my friends 89' RS coupe w/ 2.8L V6 starts, idle's like crap, then dies unless you hold the gas down. any ideas why? he say's that he thinks the idle is from loose bolts on the headers? could that couse that? Any help is appreciated.

Timing of valve overlap is probably pulling in air, definatley, and, along with it, it's pulling in any loose 'gunk' which if a good enough size of debris gets in could burn a valve or once in the cylinder, the result could be catastrophic in nature.
