Turn signals on and off (99 Protege)

Hi, my 99 Protege ES recently started to have a problem with the turn signals: Sometimes they work fine, but other times they are silent when the turn signal lever is switched on. I'm not so sure whether this is related or not: I also noticed that the emergency light does not work either when the turn signals don't work. Is this a fuse problem, or somewhere in circuit becomes loose? How to diagnose the problem?

It's almost certainly the turn signal relay. It may just need pushing in, they sometimes back out on their own.

Sorry for my ignorance: where can I locate the turn signal relay?

Since both left and right turn sginals fail at the same time, somebody suggested that the cause might be the combination switch. How to pinpoint all sorts of possibilities?

Did you fix it?

Last week my protege 99 had all turn signals stop working. The light bulbs and fuses are good; So i took my car in for oil at the express lube and after 20 min of trying they were stumped - told me take it to an electrical place or the dealer.

I would like to see if it's just a relay - where can i find it / where can i find out where it lives?

It turns out that it's described as a flasher unit rather than a turn signal relay.
I'll attach a page out of the 97 manual as soon as I can figure out how to. I doubt there is much difference in the blinker setup. If I can't figure it out, the flasher unit is behind the panel below the steering wheel, to the left of the steering wheel. There is more than one relay type device in the area and they don't have them located all in one place with identification like some cars.
