Are airbags 96 the same as a 97??

We had a small booboo with our 97 Sunfire. Run into something just hard enough to deploy the airbags. Bags blew the front windsheild out and a little minor damage to the front bumper.
So the cost to repair is ridiculous.
The airbags is what cost more than what the car is worth. Besides the bags, sounds like there are other modules and sensors to change.
So what do i do? The car is/was a great driver.

Besides the safety factor, will the car function properly without the airbags??

And getting back to the the thrd title, is a 96 the same as a 97 ?
I can buy a 96 with a blown engine for cheap and just changeover the body parts. And is the airbag system the same?

Just wondering if this will work????

Any advise, opinions are welcome.........thanks

Re: Is a 96 the same as a 97??

The simple answer is no. Although you may be able to get them to fit if you change enough parts, the electronics and the deployment parameters change every year.
Questions like this are asked and answered all the time here. There are specific items that are required to remove or replace airbags. Check out this website for the EXACT answers to your questions. This site tells you exactly what needs to be removed and replaced (seat belts & all) on over 3500 cars. It's a pay site, but it's little money well spent to get the correct answers and to see exactly what you're after...it uses pictures, not text, so you can see what you’re looking for.

Good Luck...it's not too bad of a job & if your state allows it, used parts or parts from ebay should be ok

Re: Is a 96 the same as a 97??

Not sure if people read this or not, but............
I did some more research and got quite a few different answers. So I purchased a 96 parts car, that had everything intact.
Removed the airbags, sensors and found everything had the same part numbers as my 97. After reassembling my 97, the computor reset, the dash light went off and everything is running perfectly. My local dealer told me if the warning light goes off, the system is armed and ready for action.
In this case it worked ok.
