88 Cherokee 4WD Transfer Case rebuild or replace?

NP 231 I believe...

Should I rebuild or replace this unit. If I replace, what should I go with aftermarket wise, with a little better performance? 3" Pro Comp lift, stock axles, stock drivelines.

Depends on what is wrong with the tcase you have now. If the chain or gears are broken then I would consider getting the terraflex teralow 4:1 kit and use that to rebuild the one you have. The 231's are pretty stout and have alot of aftermarket options for them.

Re: 88 Cherokee 4WD Transfer Case rebuild or replace?

Well, as you know, I have been rebuilding the entire vehicle for about a year now. I am doing a full steering upgrade, and was visiting the tranny/diff. The diff doesnt engage 4h or 4l so I figured while I was at it, I would give it some R and R.

I only know the NP231 from looking here: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=598529

I have an 88 Cherokee Pioneer. It looks as though there was only one version for my year?

I have also done some checking on those Terelow kits, and they dont show my year and make...

Re: 88 Cherokee 4WD Transfer Case rebuild or replace?

If you're building/rebuilding for off road use then check out this site. I would recommend the wide chain kit and the np231j short shaft kit which will give you a new front shaft, wider/stronger chain, new rear shaft with new rear output and fixed yoke.

Re: 88 Cherokee 4WD Transfer Case rebuild or replace?

But what then do I do to get the axles to work with that? I was reading about the teralow replacment yoke or replacment for the sye...(could be off here on name) and it requires a new CV Driveshaft...

Re: 88 Cherokee 4WD Transfer Case rebuild or replace?

Like I said it all depends on what you're wanting to do with it. Since you have it lifted 3" already are you planning on going any higher or staying at the 3" you have now? If you ever plan on going higher then you would already have the sye installed and cv driveshaft installed and ready to go. If you're not planning on going any higher then I would just get the wide chain kit and leave the regular slip yoke on it. You can also check out www.tellico4x4.com and go to the drivetrain>transfer case>np231 and get any replacement part you would need to just rebuild it the way it was factory.
