Corroded cable at starter
My friend's 98 expedition 5.4L eddie bauer didn't start one morning. No clue why. I've been reading a lot of posts about the "no start" issues with this truck. I figured it was probably the starter, battery was fully charged. I crawl under the truck to take a look and the positive cable that runs to the starter was so corroded that it literally snapped off. It is too cold outside right now for me to look any longer. I was wondering if I could cut the end off and reconnect like a normal battery cable connection or do I have to buy a new cable. And also, does this cable run to the battery or does it go to the starter relay located on the firewall on passenger side? Thanks for any suggestions.

I would think you are ok with just striping a bit of th wire and adding a new connector. I have not seen where it goes to from the starter unit.

I finished this job a couple days ago and figured I'd let you guys know how it went. What I ended up doing was taking the entire wiring group out that runs from the battery down to the starter. There is a weird clamping thing that keeps the wires away from the motor that you'll have to take out too. You can get to the little bolt for this mount through the passenger side wheel well. The corroded starter cable that I had ran from the battery straight to the starter. I was able to buy another cable from NAPA for $15. Dealership wanted nearly $50. I had to try to put back on the plastic cover that protects the wires but that didn't turn out so well. I got most of it back on and I taped the crap out of everything. Also, the cable that I bought has a post built in to one end to go on the battery and the other end fit over the bolt on the starter. I had to use a lug (that's what i think it's called) to connect the other positive cable that runs to the starter relay. Everything went back together perfectly and I sprayed the crap out of everything with protection spray after I cleaned all of the corrosion. I really like it when people post after they've finished a job, so I figured I'd let ya know.
