Noisy Lifter...now....!

I had something strange happen. One morning about week ago...I headed off to work as usually...but decided to accellerate rapidly...well when I jumped on it...my car jump...and then lost some engine power...so I backed off of it...and...then just noticed it running very rough.
So I stopped to check it out...I now have a LOUD tapping sound...sounds like lifter clicking......

anyway...the kicker is the engine had NO oil whatsoever in it. I change my oil regularly...and..never.ever..noticed any oil leaking while parked..etc..

The totally empty oil case really shocked me....has anyone had this happen to them?

Don't get me wrong..I drive my car about 40 miles each weekday to/fro work....and I'm doing 70 or over mostly highway....but man...would this type of high RPM driving....DRAIN all of my oil OUT...?

Now I have oil in it...and the tappnig is noticable...I'm wondering what I need to do to get rid of the tapping and HOW MUCH IT IS GOING TO COST..?

Thanks
MikeV

you have carboned oil deposits in the lifters and this is causing the noise..... most likely,,,, my kid did this once...... add 4oz of marvel mystery oil to crank case ...... when noise disappears usually 100mi... change oil..... usually this could simply be installing oil filter with old filter gasket still on so with 2 gaskets it leaks out oil while running......do not add more than 4oz.. more is not better......

Re: Noisy Lifter...now....!

Well,...why would it be running SMOOTH as silk one day....and then...I jump on it...and it breaks the lifter...? I think its more that "carbon" deposits. It happened immediately when I accelerated hard with no oil in engine on COLD morning.

I think a lifter was "damaged" or worse the CAM was damaged.

Anyway...I may try your suggestion...but I think its more than just deposits...

Thanks

anyway...the kicker is the engine had NO oil whatsoever in it. I change my oil regularly...and..never.ever..noticed any oil leaking while parked..etc.. this is why!!!!!!!if you ran engine constantly with low oil pressure cam lobes would get worn... that takes some time... you have lifter noise if engine runs fine but you have lifter noise i suspect carbon causing lifter to not hold oil............if this does not fix noise you probably have a spun bearing esp if it runs bad......

Runs fine...as far as I can tell..but I'm leary about punchin it like I usually do...I mean man...the engine ran smoooth...and strong...before this incident. No noises at alll.

I have my oil changed every 3 months like clockwork..and never a problem..never empty or low at that interval.....actually I think that the service station...may NOT have screwed the drain plug in tight....maybe my oil slowly leaked out over time.....then....it was empty...and I punched it..and it broke......weird

OK so you do not change your oil ..... you have a service station do it... so now my question is do you check for proper oil level before driving from service station ???????/ my friend had his oil changed like you taking a trip to atlantic city after 100mi engine lt came on added 4quarts of oil when he returned the service station guy said prove it!!!!!!!

Re: Noisy Lifter...now....!

Didn't you get a low oil level or low oil pressure warning light??
