Fidel Castro Resigns.

After nearly half a decade in office, the longest in term for a head of government, Fidel Castro announced he was resigning. He posted his letter online ( where Cuban residents do not have access to the Internet,) announcing the news. His brother Raoul is expected to resume his duties. president Bush hopes to see changes in Cuba now that Fidel has given up power... I wouldn't hold my breath on any sweeping changes.

Re: Fidel Castro Resigns.

Nothing will till he's dead and gone, at least. Resigning means nothing, just that he's not the public face in office. Even still...he's gotta be cloned.

Re: Fidel Castro Resigns.

I don't think we'll see any real changes for another 5-10 years, to be honest. I think we'll see them, as each ruler has their own particular style, even if it is his brother.

Still, glad to hear the news.

Re: Fidel Castro Resigns.

His brother's only 5 years younger than him, so it makes me wonder just how long hell hold that position .We'll have to see who else emerges in the coming months/years that could possibly take over after Raoul.

Re: Fidel Castro Resigns.

I thought his brother was 70? No matter...Fidel looked really rough the last pics I saw of him.

15 years, I predict upheaval in Cuba as the ruling family is replaced.

Maybe it's time to end the U.S. Embargo and political sanctions and send all the noisy Cubanistas living the good life in Miami back home. Sort of like the Mariel boatlift in reverse.

Re: Fidel Castro Resigns.

The embargo really hasn't helped anybody in the U.S. or Cuba. If the U.S. would pull its head out of its ass, it would give Cuba a chance to do the same.

Our national anus grows tighter around our neck with each passing year.

If we do ever end the embargo against Cuba then they'll lose that time-warp look they maintain with all those vintage 50s cars still filling the streets

Re: Fidel Castro Resigns.

The issue with lifting the embargo has to do with the landowners who were evicted by Castro. They still claim their land while Castro claims its the countries and the people who owned the land hold a lot of political sway here. Opening up trade means the fight for land ownership is being given up. That the prior owners won't appreciate and will skewer any politician who does it.

I would like to see the embargo lifted and then slap one on Canada - just for the shrill it would cause.

Re: Fidel Castro Resigns.

I'd rather have fine cuban cigars than make a couple of whiners happy.

And what does Canada export anyways?
