Exclamation Relearning a Key

Hello. my dad just cut a key at a local shop. and he wanted me to figure out how to program it. the vehicle is a 02 Pontiac Grand Prix. so far i havent had any luck at trying to find any info on this topic. what i've read somewhere was that you insert the master key. Key ON Engine Off. then take it out and put the new key in .........do i put it Accesories or on. or just plop it in. then after the key is in. the security light will flash and bam the spare key is learned.but no such luck . am i skipping a step here?. is there a step in between, and how long do i wait for the security light to flash. can anyone help a begining tech out.

Re: Relearning a Key

You should have the Passkey III (VATS) vehicle anti-theft system so try either procedure listed below. Try the first one first. Good luck.

Quote:

30-Minute Re-Learn Procedure
Use this procedure after replacing the following components:

The keys
The theft deterrent module
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) if necessary, see important above.
Turn the ignition switch to RUN, with the engine OFF using a master PASSKey®III Key (Black).
Observe the SECURITY indicator. After approximately 10 minutes the indicator will turn off.
Turn the ignition switch to LOCK, and wait 5 seconds.
Repeat steps 1 through 3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.

Important
The vehicle learns the key information and/or passwords on the ignition switch transition from OFF/LOCK to RUN. You must turn the ignition switch OFF/LOCK before attempting to start the vehicle.

Start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key and password information.
With a scan tool, clear any DTCs. (optional)

Use this procedure after replacing the following components:

• The PASS-Key III (PK3) keys

• The BCM

• The PCM

Important: This procedure is not available on vehicles equipped with option code (Z49).

If replacing a BCM with an GM SPO replacement part, perform the procedure to setup a new BCM prior to the 30-Minute Relearn Procedure.

With a master PASS-Key III key, rotate the ignition to the CRANK position.
Observe the SECURITY telltale. After approximately 10 minutes, the telltale will turn OFF.
Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.
Important: The vehicle learns the key transponder information and/or passwords on the ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.

With a master PASS-Key III key, start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key transponder information and the PCM has now learned the fuel continue password.
With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.

This is right out of our service manual. If it doesn't work you will have to go to the dealer. When they say master key that is your new key the first one you program is the "master" after that one is done then to program a second key just start the car with the master one turn the car off and within 10 seconds start the car with the second key.
