Re: what is the oil i should use
I have an '03 5.9L 4x4 with 85k miles and use Mobil1 full synthetic 10w 30. I've used stnthetics in everything I've ever used with no problems ever in regards to oil issues. Mobil 1 is the most expensive, I just use it cause I trust it. There are cheaper brands that provide the same protection. For me it's just a matter of choice.

Re: what is the oil i should use
I also use Mobil 1 Full Sythetic in my 2001 RAM 1500 5.2L. Bought it used with 49,000 thats when I switched it to Mobil 1. My buddy that works for dodge has always used Mobil 1 in all his dodges even brand new off the lot ones.

Re: what is the oil i should use
Mobile 1 syn. 5w30 here, wix filter. change filter and top off oil every 3000 and oil and filter change every30,000.
Use seafoam in fuel every 5th. fill up. Use seafoam at oil change. add 8oz. to the oil and let run half an hour then drain, change filter and fill. The only exception I have with this is if the oil darkens. Then I will change is out sooner. ( vehicals other than mine) Using seafoam keeps the insides spotless from the tank to the tailpipe. My oil is gold at 30,000. and every where in between |

30,000 miles. I've been wondering about going further than the usual 3,000 before changing. I guess I'm a little scared though. I usually change every 5,000. I'll have to look into the seafoam. Where do you get it? |

Re: what is the oil i should use
Autozone, pep boys, advance auto parts, murrays, farm and fleet....you get the idea.
In contradiction to G.A.S's philosophy, oil can break down and become 'bad' without darkening in color. You're going to get blowby in your engine regardless of what oil you use. This blowby turns into little floating black particulates that turn your oil dark. Part of the oil's job is to make sure that the particulates get suspended in the oil instead of sticking to surfaces inside the engine. Once your oil breaks down, it can't do that so well anymore. If you have a damn good filter (and wix is definitely one of the best) then your filter will take care of most of the particulates. So either your filter is kickin' a$$ and your oil doesn't have particulates to worry about, or you have a bunch of sludge in your engine because the oil can't pick them up. Hope its the first. Synthetics have been proven to last longer than conventional oil, but that doesn't mean they last forever. Even if it's golden in color doesn't mean that it's till lubricating as it should. Nor does it mean that the additives it had haven't run out yet. That all being said, Richard Petty never ever changed his oil, just topped it off and changed the filter. Who am I to argue with the King? |

Re: what is the oil i should use
It's all just a matter of choice and luck. For me I usually have the bad luck. I will still to 5,000 mile oil changes.
