Re: points gap

Dwell around 28-32 degrees.

.017 in gap with a feeler gauge.

And recheck base timing after replacing them.

I owned a 73 350 it was in an impala..... the data i have for a 74 350engine from my tune up spec's manual states that plugs r44t, plug gap .o35, point dwell 29-31 i always tried for the 29deg as it always went to 31deg...,point gap .019 ,timing 8 Btdc ,this is at 600rpm ...... if engine rpm is higher this will cause timing to be slightly retarded... so try to get rpm close to 600 when adjusting timing.....points only good for 12k miles... maybe today they make them last longer? this engine will get 10mpg with a strong tail wind very large gas consumption for 145 hp..........if possible get a distributor cam wick lubricator this my cause the points to last longer

Re: points gap

aftermarket under the cap point conversion kits are available cheaply and will make a big difference.I grew up with points and unless your going for a correct restoration or just think there cool there is no reason to use them.Roughly set your point gap and get a cap with the little window(using a hex key while running) in it to fine tune the gap to the correct dwell, if a daily driver we used to check settings late spring and early fall

Re: points gap

I used to set points with a match bood cover, that is good for an emergency and will always get it running, then fine tune it with a dwell meter.

I always found that a fresh tune up on a points distributor held a crisp edge for about 3 weeks and fell off a bit.
