speedo ?

I have a 2003 windstar 3.8 v6 and My speedometer is running 2 mph fast. the dealer claims he had checked it out and it is in factory specs. this has been this way since it was new. I thought that maybe it was the tires so I waited for the factory installed tires to wear out and just resently put new one's on it and the speedo is still the same. so there is no confussion I don't drive it alot it only has 28000 miles on it. I was trying to get a taller tire for it but because of the close location of the bottom spring saddle on the strut a taller tire will not fit. I did install the recommended tire size. so if anyone can give me a idea on how to fix this it would be great. p.s I have driven through many speed check points by radar.

Re: speedo ?

I think that 2mph fast is "within spec" and not all that unusual on a number of vehicles.
I guess it is better than reading slow.
Take note that your odometer will also be off....reading more miles than you actually drove......but not a BIG difference.
I would guess that correcting it to "calibrated" specifications will be somewhat expensive.....and require a new, slightly different sized gear in the sending unit on the tranny or in the speedometer.

Re: speedo ?

I had the dash gauges replaced under warranty a few months after I bought my '01 because the tach was reading 400rpms to low (speedo was spot on). Once the gauge cluster was replaced the tach was accurate but the speedo was 5mph off at 70 mph (read 65mph). If yours is 2mph off I wouldn't worry about it. Motorcycle speedos are horribly inaccurate.

Re: speedo ?

I vaguely remember (i.e. whatever follows is probably inaccurate!) that state inspections generally accept speed readings 10% +/- the actual speed. I definitely wouldn't spend any of my own money trying to fix it!
