96 JGC Lamp for Autotrans Replacement - How 2 Change Question
Hi,
You know the lighted area that indicates if you are in park, reverse, drive, right next to the shift lever (auto trans)? My light is out. It looks like you can pull the plastic cover to replace the lamp. Is that the way to go? If so, any tips on a safe method? Thanks! |

A butter knife will do the trick.

Thanks!
Worked like a charm...once I figured out that the part that lifted up was the entire shift cover, not just the lighted insert. A typical ID 10 T error! haha |

Re: 96 JGC Lamp for Autotrans Replacement - How 2 Change Question
I'm glad to hear you figured out the gear shift light bulb. I saw other postings (perhaps a different year Jeep) that indicated that this light was a cryptic LED strip that wasn't replaceable without replacing the entire shift console (sounds a bit extreme). In my '94 Jeep GC I did what you did: Used a small screwdriver to pry off the cover right around the shift lever (just the plastic part that says "P, R, N, D..."). A bulb housing is built into this cover and it was really easy to replace (kind of like a miniature headlight, where the socket twists out to reveal the bulb). On the '94 it's the same bulb as the rear license plate light, and I happened to have one in my garage. Wow - easy fix after thinking I might have to get a new vehicle!
