Unhappy Center (Centre?) Console Light Replacement

I found a number of posts asking about this, but no solution. My problem started when I bought a used 2003 Corolla and 1 light was burnt out (center console). I didn't care too much until the 2nd bulb burnt out. When I whacked the console the lights either all come on, both turn off or one will turn on. So I think it is similar to a head light problem, i.e. you whack it when burnt out and it comes on...the filment is bad...replace the bulb. Or does could it be a loose wire(s)

I asked the dealer on how to replace the bulbs and they said to remove the screws behind the temp/speed/direction knobs. Only the speed knob seems to come off easily and yes there is a screw there. I pulled off the glove box and noticed a number of cables attached to the knobs, so I am hesitant to pull it out.

Any better Ideas. The bulbs are rediculously priced at $20 each!

All help appreciated.

Re: Center (Centre?) Console Light Replacement

if you are talking about the console where the heater controls are the you have to pull the dash trim around the instrument panel there are i think 4 screws then you have to pull the console where the radio and heater controls are and i think there are two screws one in each side then some clips. the bulbs could be blown or just not grounded which sounds like a ground if you can bump on the console and it will come on.just look for screw holes and when you have all screws out then pry real easy because you don't want to crack the plastic.the bulbs in mine cost a couple bucks for a twin pack from walmart.the heater control has the cables running to it but the panel comes off and the control stays there.
