Angry 2002 ss problems

My car started acting funny today. It was shifting hard in first gear only. I checked the tranny fluid everything was fine. Drove around the block still shifting hard. I punched to the floor got delayed pick-up but plenty of power. Cat was just replaced 2 months ago. Already had that problem!!! I sat in driveway reving the engine then i heard a whine in the engine. Can anyone give me any advice on what this problem could be?

Re: 2002 ss problems

The 2-3 shift solenoid went out on my 02' Monte three weeks after I had the catalytic replaced. I have wondered if the two might be related. To check for exhaust blockage, with the car in park, slowly press on the accelerator. You should have a smooth increase on the RPMS as you press without any cutting out. At just above 4000 rpms you activate the engine cut out and it will start to sputter. That is a safety mech to prevent you from damaging the engine. Driving in town I noticed that my car seemed to shift in to the same gear a lot. It was looking for third gear and could not find it. It shifted hard when it did. I really noitced it on the highway. It would drop from over drive to second instead of third when I lightly accelerated, and would then jump back to over drive. The rpm difference to give you an idea was 2200rpms at cruising speed and it would jump to 4500 rpms with acceleration. Normally it would catch third before second and only ramp up to about 3000-3200 rpms. Solenoids are just one of those things that are hard to predict when they will give you trouble and which one it will be. And just because one of them goes bad does not mean the rest of them will. A lot of it depends on driving habits.
