Water in trunk problem

Hey guys, i have a 95 town car signiture and having a mini problem thats turning major. I keep getting water in my trunk when it rains. Not sure if this is a common problem or what could be causing this. Is there drain holes along the trunk lid or anything i should be looking for. 2nd owner of car but doesn't look like there was an accident on rear and would cause it to be misalign. thank you for any help

Tracing water leaks requires a bit of finesse, and patience.

" Holes in the trunk lid? ", No, there are no holes in the trunk lid.

If you're located in the rust belt, you can have holes develop just about anywhere.

Assuming the lid seats evenly & adjusted properly, & the seal is in good condition.. You'll need to remove all the carpets and start some garden hose testing to see if it's leaking from the top side. After you rule that out, wheel splash is next, etc.

BTW, what type of roof material do you have? Does the rear deck get wet too? Rear shelf around the spare tire?

it does not leak whre the spare is or on the top deck inside. Its only leaks if your looking into the trunk on the left hand side right where it drops to the lowest level of the trunk. Wasn't sure if there was a common problem or russian roulette on the issue. thanks though for the insight

Again assuming.. you didn't mention whether the car needs to be moving to leak, but assuming that's the case, that sounds like some sort of road hazard damage.

- Bottoming out may have split a seam, poked a hole, etc..
- The rear tire may have tossed an object from the road into the metal, poking a hole, etc..

All four wheel wells should have plastic liners (splash guards) in place around the entire inner fender, you may have to look under the splash guards on the left.rear fender too.

With 'seams' / 'holes' problems it's sometimes very difficult to see the problem until it's late in the game and rust starts setting in. From the factory, all these seams are thoroughly covered with a rubber based filler which makes it even more difficult to 'see' a leak.

It's not easy, especially with this car, but removing the carpets (actually it's a carpet-like liner) until this is resolved will be a big help.
This one doesn't like to 'fold back' out of the way due to it's rigid backing.

its only leaking from the top of the trunk. water is settling around the rim of the trunk when its open. so has to be coming in from the top and not draining from the rim its settling and leaking.

Mine's designed same as yours.. when I wet my rear window, water flows to the gutter outside the trunk seal, then down the sides of that gutter, still outside the seal, and onto the lip above the tail lamps. With no restrictions (dirt, etc) the water doesn't settle in that gutter, it's all downhill to the tail lamps.

I've had the same problem with two of my town cars. I fixed one by replacing the trunk seal. Dry as a bone in there now. You could try cleaning the seal and trunk lip with some lacquer thinner. That will cut any crud and make sure the trunk lid seals.
