2003 GMC Sonoma Zr2 Broken Defroster Door (No Floor Heat)

So I have a 2003 GMC SONOMA, 55,000 miles, love the truck. Obivously its completly out of warranty. No im not a very "Automibile Inclinded" individual. Anyways, heres my problem.

One day i turn the truck on, obivously is like 10 degrees outside, so I turn on the heater. I realize that my feet are still freezing 20 minutes later. I then determine that im getting no floor heat. When I turn the heater to floor it just keeps blowing out of the defrost vent.

So i take my truck to my local GMC dealership so they can inspect it. They tell me that the defroster door is broke and that its like a $20.00 part (GMC part # 52470781) but it is labor intensive and it will take about 8 hours to replace, thus costing about $500.00 for the total job.

I tell them to give me the part and to not fix it. My question is, does anybody know how to fix this or where I can go to get instructions to fix it, also how much knowledge of automobiles do i need to fix this or am I SOL.

Please help me.

Thanks,
Nick

Re: 2003 GMC Sonoma Zr2 Broken Defroster Door (No Floor Heat)

First time it may take you 12hrs to 2 or more days.
500$ is not really a bad price. some dealers are over the 100$ hr.Labor Rate.

Look in the how to section on heater core replacement.
Some have a hidden bolt you can only see after taking the heater blower resistor out and look half way down in there.

A All data on line sub or a factory repair manual is the best info on them.

Dealer flat rate is 5-6 hrs.
But a first time you need to more than double the time.
Was not trying to scare you off from doing it your self.
Just letting you know what you are getting into.
Also double check and make sure it is the door before taking it apart.
Good Luck
