02 Taurus compressor kaput-Can this be done?

02 Taurus with the V/6 and auto trans. Air Cond compressor seized up. Was wondering if you can bypass the compressor and install the shorter belt. The reason I ask is because my 95 Explorer also had the compressor seize up and I was able to buy the shorter belt and just bypass the compressor. Obviously air cond was an option on the Explorer cause it even had a diagram on the inside of the hood showing you how to route the belt with air or w/o air. I know there is even a company out there that makes a pully adapter that you can install on your car if your air cond compressor should fail and you don't think it's worth buying a new one. You won't have air but you can still drive the car. I would check but the car is 2 hrs away and i'm asking for my son. Any info would be a big help. Thanks!

If you know which V6 he has (DOHC or OHV) and other options (power steering, etc) you can enter the details into the Autozone (or similar) and see if they offer a belt for a car without A/C.

If it is the compressor that's froze, can't you disconnect the clutch engage wire and let the pulley freewheel?

You actually didn't say if the clutch pulley still freespins or if is frozen, thinking the whole compresor is stuck or just the clutch pulley bearing. Good catch Willyum on the wire "bypass". I'd probably bypass the ac when I'd need to replace the belt if not too hard to do. In theory, you will get better mpg with it off and also don't have to worry about the ac clutch pulley bearing going bad. It didn't help that the clutch probably got really hot when the compressor started to freeze up and cooked the bearing grease, possibly shortening its life.

I did some checking and there is a company that makes a compressor bypass pully($35) for most makes and models of cars where the compressor freezes up. You simply take the compressor off and install the bypass pully and install the regular belt. Looks like a much cheaper fix if you want to do away with the A/C.
