Clunking Noise ??

Guys,

Have a clunking noise from front of car. Mostly on the passanger side and it happens when I go over medium to larger bumps. Is this my strutts or something else with my suspension ?

Thanks,

AJ

Re: Clunking Noise ??

Not knowing the year or milage it could be a lot of things. A "clunk" that happened first to my 2000 at around 100000 km was the stabilizer (sway) bar bushings. They both went and when going over pot holes or speed bumps you'd get a pretty good noise, passenger side more than drivers. My reasoning on that was that it seems "we" steer away from pot holes on the driver's side more than the passenger. Anyway, I'd start there first. Next maybe struts, sway bar links, ...

Re: Clunking Noise ??

On my 95 taurus I had the same exact symptoms. The sway bar end links were shot, blowing in the wind. It actually got so bad, it was past clunking and was rattling whenever I went over something. I checked my 95 Windstar, which has the same exact sway bar links, and found them to be loose. Letting them go too long may cause excessive wear on the tie rods. If the links look like giant white dog bones, then you have the originals on, they are junk. I used TRW, all metal parts, much better. If it's not that, I would look in the Windstar forum for other threads on noises, clunking, etc. that have to do with the front tension strut where it is bolted and passes thru the subframe. A break in the weld of the washer dish and the subframe is a common failure and Wiswind has pix and documentation on this.
