Hey there! I just purchased a used 97 Grand AM GT. I would like to upgrade the speakers in the car, but need some help first.
1) The front speakers have a 6 1/2 inch grill cover that covers 4x6 speakers. Will the door allow 6 1/2 speakers? Has anyone placed 6 1/2's in there? How does the grill come off? I tried pulling on it but the 4 tabs will not release. I feel like I may break it. Any suggestions there??? 2) The rear speakers appear to be 6x9's. Is that correct??? What is the secret at getting at them from the back seat? How do you remove the cover that spans the rear window? 3) Does the stock head unit have an amp wire that will turn on an amp installed in the trunk? Or do I have to install a new stereo that has a remote turn on? Any suggestions there for being able to continue to use the stock stereo with an amp and sub hooked up to it? Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!:sun: |

1) you have to saw off some plastic to put in 6 1/2s. You have to open the cover for the door to unscrew the lids.
2) the rear speakers are 6x9s. You can get to the speakers by opening up your trunk, go inside the trunk and look up. You can see and unscrew the speakers from there. 3)Is it a CD or a cassette player? Also, try turning on your stock sytem at max volume and drive around for about 45 minutes. Is the sound distorting? You have to drive around. You can't just leave the car on for 45 minutes. This will give you an idea about your amp. |

i'd check out crutchfield.com to see if they have adapters because they do list other size speakers besides the 4x6 or the 6x9's when i search for my Grand Am, they just require extra work to get them into the car.

audio upgrade
I've also been uping the anti when it comes to the audio system. To get at the 4X6's at the front I had to remove the door paneling cuz the speaker grille can only be fastened from the inside, all you have to do is pop out the retainers and your whole door moulding or cover will come off. I have a 96 grand am, but i think they're pretty much the same. As for the back, I had to remove the back seats so i could get to the back speakers cuz the speaker rack wouldn't let you slip them in from the bottom. To remove the seats you'll need to unscrew the two bolts just under seats, and then remove the seatbelts with a torx bit. NOW I"VE GOT A QUESTION, do you think the grand am can handle two amps
i've got 2 12" subwoofer and another amp running the inside? |
